Israel Gas Company Announces New Findings

Jerusalem (ANTARA News / AFP) - An Israeli energy company on Thursday said it has discovered natural gas reserves off the coast of the Mediterranean countries.

"I hope that we will soon reach drilling success in commercial quantities," said executive director Hachshara Energy, Ohad Marani told Israeli public radio.

Initial tests indicate that the new field, named Sarah and Mira, located about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the city in northern Israel, Hadera, can contain about 184 billion cubic meters (6.5 trillion cubic feet), the radio said.

Israel has discovered gas fields offshore in the Tamar and Leviathan, 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the northern port of Haifa.

Leviathan believed to contain about 450 billion cubic meters (16 trillion cubic feet) of gas and Tamar 238 billion cubic meters (8.4 trillion cubic feet).

The discovery that would sharply reduce the import dependence of Israel from neighboring Egypt, which currently supplies about 43 percent of its natural gas needs.

Egyptian gas deliveries to Israel cut off for several weeks after the attack on February 5 during the Sinai pipeline of anti-government protests, which eventually dropped the 30-year regime of President Hosni Mubarak.

They were interrupted again in April, when the unidentified saboteurs bombed the pipeline, and does not operate again until June 10.

The fall of Mubarak, the old ally of the Jewish state, has sparked fears in Israel that the new regime in Cairo could take a hard line against its neighbors to the north. (A026/A011/K004)
