JAKARTA. Looking at projections of economic growth and energy supplies needed in the coming year, especially the increasing demand on natural gas, the Government has developed policies that aim to optimize the supply of natural gas and expand the availability of gas infrastructure.

This was said by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) at the opening of Darwin Zahedy Saleh Gas & LNG Business Forum, held in conjunction with Indogas 2011, at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Monday (01/24/2011).

According to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, to optimize gas supply, Government policy has aimed to encourage the exploration of frontier areas and the development of unconventional gas potential in Indonesia, particularly coal bed methane (CBM). Success in increasing the supply of gas, either from conventional sources and non-conventional, not only profitable domestic demand, but also will open up opportunities for export and supports the regional market.

Minister said, the theme Indogas 2011 "Clean Energy for Sustainable Development" is very timely. "Now is the time to synergize that Indonesia's natural gas both to support economic development while developing a clean environment," said the Minister.

Indonesia also has plenty of room to explore the technology to convert emissions, such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is now widely used in some developed countries. With the right technology, small gas flares can also be converted to produce electricity and town gas.

On the other hand, to increase the utilization of natural gas by the domestic market, the Government also continues to encourage development of natural gas infrastructure and facilities, namely in the form of LNG receiving terminals such as Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (Onion), as well as the development of natural gas transmission and distribution pipes.

"Supported by abundant resources, professionalism, technology, and conducive government policies, we will see the supply of clean energy for sustainable development," continued the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. (esdm)
