JAKARTA. Indonesia wants to become the first country to produce LNG from coal bed methane (CBM). Expected before 2014, has been able to produce LNG from the CBM.

Earlier at the event last April IndoCBM, President and CEO Craig Steward Vico Indonesia, declared his determination to produce LNG from the CBM in the year 2012 by utilizing the Bontang LNG plant.

The potential for coal bed methane (coal bed methane / CBM), Indonesia is very large which is 453.3 trillion cubic feet, spread on 11 hydrocarbon basins. From these resources, amounted to 112.47 trillion cubic feet of CBM reserves are proven reserves and potential reserves is 57.60 TCF.

Indonesian CBM basin located in South Sumatra (183 TCF), Barito (101.6 TCF), Kutei (89.4 TCF) and the Central Sumatra (52.5 TCF) for prospective high category. North Tarakan Basin (17.5 TCF), Berau (8.4 TCF), Ombilin (0.5 TCF), Sand / Asam-Asam (3.0 TCF) and Jatibarang (0.8) has a medium category. While the basin of Sulawesi (2.0 TCF) and Bengkulu (3.6 TCF) Uncategorized prospective low.

CBM has been commercially cultivated in several countries like the United States, Canada, China and Australia. Based on the evaluation conducted by the Government, the condition of CBM exploitation in Indonesia is closer to the Powder River Basin, USA, where coal is the maturity level of sub-bituminous.
