Development of geothermal energy could produce 2010 MW of electricity 2200

JAKARTA: PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) expects to spend U.S. $ 250 million to realize the target of drilling 33 exploration wells in the geothermal working areas (WKP) this year.
According to Director of Eternal Poernomo PGE, investment fund for drilling exploration wells in 2010, nearly two times larger than the previous year U.S. $ 130 million for 23 wells.
"This year, we aim to drill 33 wells and the number keeps increasing every year. Geothermal potential there is now a major opportunity for the company," he said yesterday.

In 2008, he explained, PGE only spend about U.S. $ 70 million for the cost of drilling a few wells. However, investment demand increased to about U.S. $ 130 million in 2009 to drill 23 exploration wells.

He explained several exploration wells to be drilled this year, including around four wells in the WKP Hululais, two wells at the WKP Sungai Penuh, four wells in the WKP Kotamubago, and other WKP.

He further explained PGE plans to donate approximately 2200 MW of geothermal power to megaproyek 10,000 MW phase II of the total of about 4700 MW.

"The goal, every year, PGE will increase investment for the development of this geothermal energy. In later 2011, there are approximately 30 wells will be drilled in 2012 and also 30 wells again. We believe the investment for geothermal energy development will continue to grow," Abadi said.

The government last week to target new investment commitments this year from geothermal energy utilization of about U.S. $ 12 billion with a capacity of 3977 MW as part of a 10,000 MW generating megaproyek stage II. This target is consistent with the implementation of the World Geothermal Congress, 4 in Bali on 25-30 April 2010.

Great potential

On the other hand, the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) says Indonesia has the potential resources of geothermal energy for more than 28,170 MW (40% potential of the world). Energy spread following the path of volcanic starting from Sumatra, Java, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Maluku.

"Until now, only 1198 MW which is used to generate electricity, or only 0.9% of the total energy mix in Indonesia," said Arya Rezavidi, Director of the Center for the Study and Conservation of Technology BPPT Conversion.

He tells the potential source of geothermal energy spread in many parts of eastern Indonesia, such as NTT, Maluku, Sulawesi, and other remote areas. "But the area of electricity generation is dominated by diesel power [diesel]."

Based on the results of studies with the Ministry of Research and Technology and the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology, he said, there are more than 200 MW diesel power in NTB, NTT, Maluku and North Maluku, which can be substituted with small PLTP.

"If implemented, the potential fuel savings could be kiloliters 200,000 / year, which is equivalent to Rp1 trillion more per year. While the government subsidy on electricity by 2009 to reach Rp51, 9 trillion," he said.

He mentioned that Indonesia does not have the technology ready to use, and proven for small-scale PLTP. In fact, he said, small-scale PLTP generating potential as a pioneer or a utility on the development of geothermal field, or during the construction period.

To accelerate the utilization of geothermal energy in Indonesia, continued Arya, BPPT PLTP develop small scale through the preparation of engineering design phase power systems, and components selurug. Later the whole process to manufacture components EPC pembangkitnya conducted by the domestic industry.
